The town of Nishinomiya is located on the main highway connecting Kyoto to the western part of Japan and also has a harbor, which has made it a busy place where people and goods have gathered since ancient times, and where people visit the shrine to pray. The shrine also became a spiritual center for sake brewers, as rice and other raw materials for sake were readily available and sake could be sold by ship to various destinations.
