From far away, the temple of Poseidon stands, proud remnant of the glory of the 5th century BC. Reported since Homer’s -Odysseia- the end of Sounion peninsula became a place of worship of Poseidon and Athena with temples from the 6th century BC. During the early 5th century BC, the Athenians raised the imposing temple in honor of Poseidon, in the fortress that protected the coast of Attica; its ruins have survived until nowadays. Lower, northern of the temple of Poseidon the sanctuary of Athena was also built. The decline during the Peloponnesian war, which was intensified during the first century B.C. led to the fall of the sanctuary during the later years, when travelers, including the philhellene English poet Lord Byron visited the place, enchanted by its location, just before the start of the excavations and the discovery of its ruins. After your visit to Sounio, you will return to Athens along the same coastal road.
